Nuclear regulation

In 1985, the first Act on the Use of Atomic Energy for Peaceful Purposes was adopted. It reflected the then IAEA standards and the international commitments of Bulgaria in the field.

A new Act on the Safe Use of Nuclear Energy (ASUNE) was adopted in 2002. According to ASUNE Bulgarian Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NRA) is the specialized body of the executive power that implements state regulation of the safe use of nuclear energy. At present, the main activities of the NRA include the regulation and control of nuclear safety and radiation protection in 14 nuclear facilities and over 2000 sites with sources of ionizing radiation.
